Roy Thomson Hall - 7:30PM
Toronto, Ont
Canada

Tickets are now on sale for the WORLD PREMIERE of ADIZOKAN - an image-rich experience and potent mix of dance, video, electro-acoustic and orchestra.

Celebrate the evocative culture of Canadian Indigenous peoples in a singular concert curated and directed by Sandra Laronde, founder and artistic director of Red Sky Performance. Experience the world premiere of Adizokan—a new genre-bending creation that explores Indigenous connections to ancestral origins. Inspired by Indigenous cosmology, sky and star stories, and the complex traces of a deep past and future. This image-rich experience is a potent mix of dance, video, electro-acoustic and orchestra by Canadian composer Eliot Britton.

Very excited to be a part of this 'first of its kind' production.

Nanaandawe’iti Nagamonan: Healing Songs to honor the Survivors
6-9PM
Indian Residential School Museum of Canada
Portage La Prairie, Manitoba
CANADA
Price: FREE PUBLIC EVENT
THE WHAT??: CBC radio will be presenting a concert of live music on the site of a former Indian Residential School. The event will take place at the end of a conference for Residential School Survivors that will be held on the grounds of the former school by the Long Plains First Nation. The concert will be open to the public and free to attend, with special efforts being made to reach out to Residential School Survivors in the surrounding area. All of the musicians performing will have a tie to Residential Schools, either having attended themselves or having felt the intergenerational impact of them. The lineup consists of Billy Joe Green and his band, Fara Palmer and Burnt Project 1. All of the artists have agreed to write a new song as a CBC commission on the theme of truth and reconciliation or healing. The destination for the concert is on the June 20th edition of CBC Radio Two’s Canada Live. It will be hosted live from the stage by Wabanakwut Kinew, with additional production elements incorporated for the national broadcast, including Residential School Survivors testimonials and interviews with the artists. THE WHY??: The goal is to present an evening of music that will preserve the Residential School experience for posterity, but more importantly offer the strength of hope that can come through the healing power of the arts. All of the artists have struggled in their own lives: some with addiction, other with legal problems, others still with emotional trauma. The lessons of how they overcame those to become the role models that they are will have a powerful effect in the Aboriginal community, and act as a harbinger of change for listeners from the mainstream community. The stories of hope and healing will be shared through stories and songs. THE ARTISTS: All of the artists bring a different piece of the Residential School experience. Billy Joe Green is a blues musician and Residential School survivor. He attended the Ceclia-Jeffrey Residential School in Kenora for 10 years that he describes as an effort to “de-spiritualize” him. He’s turned a corner since fighting a personal battle with alcohol, and is now in demand as a performer across Canada. He’s won Canadian Aborignal Music Awards, a Western Canadian Music Award and an Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Award, as well as garnering a Juno nomination. Fara Palmer is a pop singer and second generation survivor, meaning that her mother and older family members attended Indian Residential Schools. Fara’s been a well-known pop singer and actor in the native community. She’s won a number of Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards and received three Juno nominations. A career highlight was performing a song she wrote about her mother’s residential school experience at the 2007 National Aboriginal Achievement Awards. Burnt Project 1 is a powerful world-fusion band led by Dave Belanger, who can be described as the youngest generation of Residential School Survivors. Dave is now a Juno award winner who plays Folk Festivals across Canada, but 10 years ago he was being released from Stony Mountain Penitentiary after serving time at institutions across western Canada. It is his life story that shows how the intergenerational effects of Residential Schools are being manifested as modern social problems in the inner-cities of places like Winnipeg, Regina and Calgary. THE LEAD UP: The Long Plains First Nation will be holding a gathering of Residential School Survivors on June 5th and 6th. The event will feature workshops for survivors as well as a number of special events. Some of these include the passing of the flame of hope, where a torch will be passed on to another first nation to inspire the healing journey of that community, and a traditional “wiping away the tears” ceremony. This ceremony is usually done to relieve the misery of a grieving family, but will be modified to help improve the feelings of the attendees and to help them let go of their pain. The agenda will be set by end of day May 15. The CBC is engaged in ongoing communications with the Long Plains FN to coordinate the two events with one another. The CBC will also be assigning current affairs reporter Sheila North-Wilson to gather stories the week leading up to the concert. Her goal will be to deliver content to Television News at 6 as well as the local radio shows. Current story ideas include covering the newsworthy events of the conference, concert, lining up interviews with the artists and gathering stories of Residential School survivors. For further info, contact Wab Kinew via email at wab.kinew@cbc.ca
